Ayodhya rewards an early start more than almost any pilgrimage town in India: the core temples open by dawn, the 76 steps at Hanuman Garhi are cool and empty, and you clear Ram Mandir before the mid-morning rush. Tradition in Ayodhya is specific: you take Hanuman's blessing before you approach Ram's sanctum. This 10th-century hilltop temple houses the child form of Hanuman, Bal Hanuman, in Anjani's lap, and the climb is 76 stone steps - no lift. The temple is built like a four-sided fort with circular ramparts at each corner, and tradition links its founding to the saint Tulsidas, which is why pilgrims call it the garhi, the fortress that Hanuman himself guards.

A sacred pond near the Ram temple, Suryakund is revered for its cleansing waters, and devotees traditionally purify themselves here before darshan. It is a short, calm stop that most rushed day-tours skip entirely.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva and said to be established by Kush, Lord Rama's son, Nageshwarnath is one of Ayodhya's most ancient shrines and sits close to the river. It is said Kush lost his armlet in the Sarayu and a Nag-Kanya returned it; in gratitude he built this shrine, which makes it one of the few structures carrying Ayodhya's most ancient memory.

A long series of ghats on the Sarayu, roughly 1.2 km from the Ram Mandir. In the morning it is peaceful - pilgrims taking a ritual dip, the Lata Mangeshkar Chowk nearby - and it sets up your return here at dusk for the aarti. These are the same ghats that host Ayodhya's record-breaking Deepotsav, when more than 22 lakh earthen lamps were lit along the Sarayu on the 2023 eve of Diwali.
The water is released and pumped daily and can be muddy; stay on the maintained steps and keep bags closed against monkeys.
Both Ram Mandir and Hanuman Garhi close around midday, so instead of standing at shut gates we break for a pure-veg thali and then drive out to the two Ramayana sites you cannot reach on foot.
About 8-10 km from the core (around 3 km upstream by river), Guptar Ghat is revered as the place where Lord Rama took jal samadhi and left the mortal world. It is far quieter than Ram Ki Paidi - a place for reflection, an optional short boat ride and a dip in clear Sarayu water. The long colonnaded steps and the small Vijayraghav Mandir beside them make this the most unhurried stop of the day, and the point where guests who came only for the temples often slow down for the first time.
The boat and dip are paid locally; your guide helps you agree the fare before you step onto the boat, and the current is stronger here than at the city ghats, so bathing is done from the steps.
About 15 km south of Ayodhya, Nandigram is where Bharat ruled during Lord Rama's fourteen-year exile, keeping Rama's paduka (sandals) on the throne and living as a hermit outside the capital until his brother returned - one of the Ramayana's most moving chapters. The Bharat-Hanuman temple and the Bharat Kund sarovar mark the spot, and because so few day-tours come this far, you often have it almost to yourself.
This is the farthest point of the day; on a slower or elderly group we discuss trimming it in advance so the evening aarti is never rushed.
We return to the ghats for the evening Saryu Aarti - rows of lamps, synchronised chanting and a crowd that gathers as the sky turns from orange to black. What travel guides don't tell you before you arrive
Most blogs tell you the Ram Mandir is open all day and darshan is easy. Both halves are misleading, and both cost pilgrims their darshan.
First, the timing. General darshan of Ram Lalla runs in two sessions - roughly 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM - with the temple closed in between for the Bhog offering and the deity's rest. Any group that arrives between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM finds the gates shut. The 7:00-11:00 AM window has the shortest queue, which is exactly why Experience My India times your arrival for the 7:00 AM opening and puts Hanuman Garhi ahead of it at 5:45 AM, not after.
Second, the security. Mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, leather items and bags are not permitted inside.
