Sawan (सावन), the Shravan month, is the holiest stretch of the year for Shiva, running 30 July to 28 August 2026 in North India. In Kashi, his own city, every Monday brings a sea of devotees to Kashi Vishwanath, the Kanwar Yatra floods the roads with saffron, and the Ganga jal is poured over the Jyotirlinga for a full month. varanasiayodhyatours.com plans the Monday darshan windows, the Kanwar-season logistics and your own Rudrabhishek, on WhatsApp.

Sawan 2026 dates and the four Somwars

Sawan follows the Purnimant calendar in North India: 30 July to 28 August 2026, ending on Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan). South and West India keep the same month a fortnight later (about 13 August to 10 September). The four Mondays, the Sawan Somwars, are the spine of the month.

Why is Sawan sacred to Shiva?

The month traces to the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean, when the poison halahala rose and Shiva drank it to save creation, holding it in his throat and becoming Neelkanth. The gods poured Ganga water over him to cool the burning, and the monsoon of Shravan is read as nature repeating that abhishek over the earth. So through Sawan, devotees pour water and milk over the Shivling in the same act of gratitude, most powerfully on Mondays, the day of the moon that Shiva wears. In Kashi, where Shiva is not a visiting deity but the resident lord, the whole month is his.

From the ground: for my Telugu and Kannada guests, this is the Shravana Somavara you keep at home, offered at the Kashi Jyotirlinga itself. I plan the abhishek so you pour the jal with your own hands, in your own tongue, and not from the back of an hour-long line.

The Sawan Mondays in Kashi

Each Sawan Somwar, Kashi Vishwanath draws lakhs. Devotees fast through the day, break it after the evening worship, and offer jalabhishek or a full Rudrabhishek to the linga; unmarried women keep the fast for a good husband, following Parvati, who fasted every Shravan Monday to win Shiva. The queue on a Sawan Monday is the longest ordinary queue of the Kashi year outside the festivals themselves, and it only grows through the day. The single most useful thing on a Monday is the pre-dawn window, before the city wakes into the line.

The Kanwar Yatra

Through Sawan, the Kanwariyas walk. Saffron-clad devotees carry decorated kanwars, pots of Ganga jal slung on a bamboo pole, on foot from the river to their Shiva temple, chanting "Bol Bam" and "Har Har Mahadev". Varanasi is both a source of the jal and a destination, and the roads through the month carry rivers of walkers, with camps offering food and rest. It is a moving wall of devotion and, honestly, a logistical fact: road movement slows across the region, and we plan around the Kanwar routes rather than into them.

Festivals within Sawan

  • Sawan Shivratri (11 Aug): the Shivratri of the month, kept with the night vigil and midnight abhishek.
  • Nag Panchami (17 Aug): worship of the serpent deities, this year falling on the 3rd Sawan Monday, a double auspicious day.
  • Mangala Gauri Vrat (Tuesdays: 4, 11, 18, 25 Aug): kept by newly married women for their husbands' long life.
  • Raksha Bandhan / Shravan Purnima (28 Aug): the month closes on one of the most festival-dense days of the year.

Where to be in Kashi during Sawan

  • Kashi Vishwanath corridor: the centre of every Monday and of the whole month; go at the window, not at whim.
  • The Ganga ghats at dawn: the snan that begins a Sawan Monday, and where the jal for abhishek is drawn.
  • Mahamrityunjaya and Tilbhandeshwar temples: the great secondary Shiva shrines, intense and local through Sawan.
  • A quieter Shiva temple for your own Rudrabhishek: where you actually pour the jal yourself, with our pandit.

Darshan during Sawan: the honest truth

Kashi Vishwanath runs its official paid sugam darshan tiers on ordinary days, and we use them for our guests. On Sawan Mondays and Sawan Shivratri the crowd is festival-scale, and the temple manages continuous queues; the honest advantage a good operator gives is the timing, the pre-dawn window and the locker run, not a shortcut past a lakh of devotees. Anyone selling "guaranteed VIP Sawan darshan" past that crowd is selling the usual Varanasi fiction, alongside the fake aarti seats and boat touts. What we do arrange for real: the Monday darshan window, and your own Rudrabhishek at a quieter temple where you pour the Ganga jal with your own hands, in your language, the dakshina agreed before it begins.

How to reach Varanasi for Sawan

Fly into Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS), about 25 km out; trains serve Varanasi Junction, Banaras and Kashi stations. Through Sawan, the Kanwar Yatra slows the roads across eastern UP; book transport early and expect diversions. On Mondays the old-city lanes to the corridor are walked. Our package guests move by private Innova Crysta, routed around the Kanwar corridors. Full detail in the How to Reach Varanasi guide.

Where to stay for Sawan

Our package guests stay at the Taj Ganges or Hilton Varanasi with breakfast, a calm base through a busy, wet month, with the Innova on the Monday runs. Ghat-side guesthouses put you in the sound of "Bol Bam" and fill on the Somwars. More in the Stay & Hotels guide.

What to carry in Sawan

  • It is monsoon: a compact umbrella or poncho, and footwear that copes with wet steps.
  • Many wear rudraksha and offer bilva (bel) leaves; both are sold at the lane mouths, small notes.
  • Phones are deposited before the sanctum area; carry ID and little else on the Monday run.
  • Fasting pilgrims: phalahar is everywhere; tell your guide and the day paces around the vrat.
  • Ganga jal and milk for abhishek are arranged with your Rudrabhishek; you need only bring your intention.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Sawan in 2026?

In North India, 30 July to 28 August 2026, ending on Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan). South and West India keep the same month about 13 August to 10 September.

What are the Sawan Somwar dates for 2026?

The four Mondays are 3, 10, 17 and 24 August 2026. The third, on 17 August, coincides with Nag Panchami, a double auspicious day.

Why is Sawan dedicated to Shiva?

It recalls Shiva drinking the ocean-churning poison to save creation; the monsoon is seen as nature's abhishek cooling him, and devotees pour water over the Shivling in the same gratitude, most powerfully on Mondays.

When is Sawan Shivratri 2026?

The night of Tuesday, 11 August 2026, with the main Nishita worship around midnight into the early hours of 12 August.

What is the Kanwar Yatra?

Saffron-clad devotees carry Ganga jal on foot to offer at Shiva temples through Sawan, chanting "Bol Bam". Varanasi is both a source and a destination, and the roads carry walkers all month.

Can I do my own Rudrabhishek at Kashi Vishwanath in Sawan?

The main temple runs continuous managed queues on the Mondays; for a hands-on abhishek we arrange it at a quieter Shiva temple with our pandit, in your language, so you pour the jal yourself.

How crowded is a Sawan Monday?

The longest ordinary queue of the Kashi year outside the festivals, growing all day. The pre-dawn window is the honest answer.

How is Sawan different from Maha Shivratri?

Maha Shivratri is one great night in Phalguna; Sawan is a whole month in the monsoon, with four sacred Mondays. Kashi fills for Shiva twice a year, and these are the two.

Is Sawan a good time for South Indian pilgrims?

Yes; the Shravana Somavara vrat is kept widely in the South, and we guide it at the Kashi Jyotirlinga in Telugu and Kannada.

Is monsoon a problem for visiting?

It rains, but that is the point of Sawan; the ghats and temples run through it. Pack for wet, and the month rewards you.

Varanasi

Subah-e-Banaras (सुबह-ए-बनारस) is Varanasi's daily dawn ritual at Assi Ghat: begun on 24 November 2014, it opens in the Brahma Muhurta before sunrise with Vedic chanting and a hawan, a morning Ganga aarti to the rising sun, then live Banaras Gharana classical music and an open yoga session on the ghat steps. It runs every morning, is free to attend, and is the contemplative dawn counterpart to the grand evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh. varanasiayodhyatours.com plans the pre-dawn pickup, the seating and a sunrise boat around it, on WhatsApp.
