Lathmar Holi (लठमार होली), the "Holi played with sticks," is the most famous of all the Braj Holi celebrations: at Barsana, Radha's village, the women drive off the visiting men of Nandgaon, Krishna's village, with long wooden lathis, while the men defend themselves with leather shields and sing teasing Holi songs. It falls a week before the main Holi, around 16 March 2027 at Barsana, with Nandgaon's turn the next day. varanasiayodhyatours.com plans the day at the Radha Rani temple and the two villages, safely and with a guide, on WhatsApp.

The legend

Lathmar Holi re-lives a Braj story of Radha and Krishna. Krishna, from Nandgaon, would come across to Barsana, Radha's village, to tease her and her friends and colour them at Holi; the gopis, in playful defence, chased him and his companions away with sticks. Centuries on, the villages keep the game: the men of Nandgaon come to Barsana to "play Holi," and the women of Barsana meet them with the lath. It is read today as a celebration of divine love and of the strength and spirit of Braj's women, joy and devotion in the form of a mock battle.

From the ground: for my Telugu and Kannada guests I explain that this is not a staged show for tourists; it is a living village tradition, an act of devotion to Radha and Krishna that the people of Barsana and Nandgaon have kept for generations. You are a guest at their festival, which is exactly how to enjoy it.

How it is played

The men of Nandgaon arrive at Barsana and enter the lanes; they are not allowed to strike back, their only defence is a sturdy leather shield and their wit, as they sing teasing Holi geet to provoke the women. The women of Barsana, in bright saris, answer with the lathi, and the streets fill with colour, drumbeats, folk song and laughter. The heart of it is Barsana's Rangili Gali, the narrow lane below the Radha Rani temple, where the crowd, the colour and the sticks come together in the day's most charged and photographed hour.

Laddu Holi comes first

The day before the sticks, Barsana keeps Laddu Holi at the Radha Rani (Shriji) temple atop the hill. It marks the "Phag invitation," Nandgaon's priests coming to accept Barsana's invitation to play Holi, and the priests shower laddus, sweets, from the temple balcony onto the crowd as a blessing, amid Radha-Krishna bhajans and gentle colour. It is the sweet overture, "from laddu to lath," before the next day's play.

Barsana, then Nandgaon

The game is played in two halves on two days. First, at Barsana, the Nandgaon men face the Barsana women's lathis. The next day the roles reverse: the men of Barsana travel to Nandgaon, about 8 km away, and the women of Nandgaon take up the sticks at the Nand Bhawan temple, Krishna's childhood home. To see both, on consecutive days, is the complete Lathmar Holi; the Nandgaon day is a little less crowded than Barsana's.

The Radha Rani temple

The focal point of Barsana's Holi is the Shri Radha Rani temple, the Shriji temple, on the hill above the town, one of the few temples in India dedicated to Radha herself. Special aartis and bhajans fill it through the festival, and priests shower gulal from its heights. The hill, the sandstone temple and the narrow lanes below are the stage on which the whole of Lathmar Holi is set; a darshan of Radha Rani is the devotional heart of the day.

The wider Braj Holi

Lathmar Holi is the most famous act of a Braj Holi season that runs for days and takes many forms: Phoolon wali Holi, the flower Holi at the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan on Rangbhari Ekadashi, where devotees are showered with petals; the moving Widows' Holi of Vrindavan, which breaks an old social taboo; Huranga at Dauji the day after Holi; and the Charkula dance, women balancing tiers of lit lamps on their heads. A Braj Holi trip can hold several of these; tell us which draw you and we build around them. It complements, in a different key, the ash-and-devotion Holi in Varanasi of the Kashi ghats.

Crowds and safety

Point
What to know
Arrive early
Be in Barsana by around 8 AM; after mid-morning the lanes are extremely dense
The lathis are real
The blows are playful but genuine; spectators stand back from the play, and we position you safely
Crowds can be rough
The crush is large and at times unruly; a guide and a group are strongly advised, especially for women travellers
Dress modestly
Barsana's Holi is devotional, not a free-for-all; wear old, light, modest clothes you can stain
Bhang caution
Thandai here is sometimes laced with bhang (cannabis); ask before you drink
This is a real, intense, crowded festival, and honesty about it matters.

The honest note

Lathmar Holi is free and belongs to the villages; there is no ticket and no VIP, and anyone selling "guaranteed front-row VIP access" to a village lane is overpromising. What is genuinely worth arranging is the rest: a guide who knows Barsana's lanes and the safe vantage points, a plan that gets you in before the crush and to Nandgaon the next day, transport to the restriction points, and the cultural steer to enjoy the festival respectfully as a guest. This is a wonderful festival and also a demanding one; going with someone who knows it is the difference between a joyful day and a lost, overwhelmed one. We will also tell you honestly if the full-contact crush is not right for you, and steer you to the gentler Laddu Holi, the flower Holi at Banke Bihari, or a viewing spot instead.

How to reach Barsana and Nandgaon

Barsana and Nandgaon are in the Braj region of western Uttar Pradesh, near the Delhi-Agra road, a different region from the Kashi-Ayodhya belt. Fly into Delhi (about 3 to 4 hours by road) or Agra; the nearest bases are Mathura (about 45 km) and Vrindavan. Barsana and Nandgaon are about 8 km apart. On the festival days, inner lanes are closed to vehicles and the final approach is on foot, so wear sturdy footwear and carry little. We manage transport to the restriction points and guide the walk in.

Where to stay

Barsana and Nandgaon have very limited accommodation, so we base guests in comfortable hotels in Mathura or Vrindavan and run day trips to the villages for the Holi. Braj Holi week is peak season and rooms are scarce and dear, so early booking is essential; we hold relationships with near-temple properties.
